Lara Birnback joined the board of SCALEAfrica in 2014 after returning to the U.S. following three years in Nairobi, Kenya where she worked as a communications consultant to the United States Agency for International Development. Lara has over ten years of experience in the U.S. non-profit and international development world as a project manager, trainer/facilitator, grant writer and communications specialist.
Specific previous work experience includes developing and implementing community engagement and local democracy projects across the United States while at Public Agenda in New York, and supporting nascent civil society activists and organizations in Eastern Europe with the Washington D.C. based National Democratic Institute for International Affairs.
Lara has a Masters degree in International Affairs from the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University and a Bachelors degree in International Development from the University of California at Berkeley. She was the recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship in 1996. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband and daughter.
