The sanitation situation at Chiutika Basic School is dire. Currently, there are pit latrines with grass screens or mud brick outer walls. The abandoned ones are left dotting the side yard of the school. When it floods, they overflow and cause serious health threats.
The purpose of this new sanitation block is to combine the pits in order to increase the size of the holding tank, protect it from rising groundwater, and also provide a central place for handwashing. The gravity fed water tanks will be piped to faucets in the blocks, so that all students and teachers are able to wash hands after use. This simple act goes an long way in stopping the spread of disease and makes for a healthier school environment.
