The Mary Ellen O'Connell Mahoney Community Center will be located at Vinza Community School in Saweta, Zambia. The center is being dedicated to Mary Ellen by her husband, John Mahoney, and family to honor her tireless devotion to serving people and communities in need. Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts in 1951, Mary Ellen spent the entirety of her professional life as social worker in Lawrence, working with the most vulnerable citizens in our communities. Her non-judgmental and generous nature have been an inspiration to everyone that knew her. The center will stand as a lasting and meaningful tribute to her life of service and good works.
For students, teachers and parents, the community center will provide a library, meeting space, an arts room, an outdoor classroom, and access to books and technology. The aim is to create a place of hope, learning and opportunity for the all the members of the Vinza community.
