The next major construction project will be a six-classroom block in the village of Chamatwa in the South Luangwa Valley. We are currently determining which school is the most in need of our help because of all-too-common conditions like overcrowding, crumbling infrastructure, and lack of basic resources.
The central idea behind the design is to connect a series of three two-classroom blocks along a central skylit verandah. This indoor/outdoor space will provide a shaded area for students and teachers to gather in the rain or heat, but also protect the building from heat gain in this sub-tropical climate. The layout also incorporates offices, storage space and a large teacher meeting room. Passive techniques like proper daylighting, ventilation, and a rainwater collecting roof will bring simple, sustainable solutions to the school environment.
As always, our aim is to provide well-designed, well-lit and comfortable spaces that support the education of rural Zambian children. We also know that the new infrastructure inspires the kids, that they feel supported and encouraged, and that it gives the teachers spaces that allow them to work at their best - and that benefits everybody.
